desert narrative

IMG_1133
coastal desert slips away,
giving way to land sucked dry.
my heart swells, breaks, but does not
shatter.

I divide from our story
becoming my story.
whose narrative I have been telling
all this time?

cactus reaches towards the sky
my spines are up
prepared to strike.

night comes, folds into me
I walk by myself, yet not
alone.
